GPS users - can you help?
We are building a dataset of reliable 10-figure GPS references based on ground measurements (not from maps). If you would like to help, please read our requirements in the Database notes. Our interest is not limited to hills for which we lack a figure in the Hills database, as multiple entries improve the accuracy and reliability of the data.
2008 Hills Database survey
Survey results (pdf)

The survey ran from 1 July 2008 for 10 weeks, attracting 59 responses. It was encouraging to get so many favourable comments and constructive suggestions. The sample is no doubt over-represented by those who would like to see further development of the database, but that's not necessarily bad. Some key findings are:

  • Excel is not far behind Access in popularity
  • 46% of respondents use the data in their own application
  • 63% say the hills database is their preferred source of data
  • 66% use the 10-figure grid references
  • County Tops, Birketts, Graham Tops, Yeamans and HUMPs all attract 25% or more support
  • 37% would like Drop added
